Santorini, deutsch Santorin ist eine griechische Insel in der Ägäis, die südlichste der Kykladen.
Sie liegt ca. 100 km nördlich von Kreta, in 36° 25' nördlicher Breite und 25° 26' östlicher Länge, ist 71 km˛ groß und dauerhaft von rund 9.700 Einwohnern bewohnt (2002).
Die Insel hat eine sichelförmige Gestalt und bildet mit den ihr gegenüber liegenden kleinen Inseln Thirasia und Aspronisi eine alte Caldera. Die höchste Erhebung der Insel, der Eliasberg (565 m), wird von Marmor und Tonschiefer, also nicht-vulkanischen Gesteinen aufgebaut.
Die Namen der Insel
Nach der Sage entstand die Insel aus einem Klumpen Erde, der von der Argo ins Meer geworfen wurde, und wurde zunächst unter dem Namen (Kalliste- - „die Schönste“, bei Pausanias und Herodot überliefert) von Phöniziern bewohnt. Laut Pausanias gründete Theras von Autesion hier acht Generationen später eine spartanische Kolonie und benannte sie nach sich selbst, was auch als "die Wilde" wiedergegeben werden kann. Dies könnte die Herkunft des Namens durch dorische Siedler im 11. Jahrhundert v. Chr. wiedergeben.
Auch der Name, der bei Plinius überliefert ist, wurde auf die Insel bezogen, wahrscheinlich meinte er jedoch eine andere Vulkaninsel mit dem Namen, nämlich Stromboli. Des weiteren gibt es Vermutungen, dass die auf Tafeln in Knossos gefundene Bezeichnung qe-ra-si-ja eine in Santorin verehrte Göttin bezeichnet, die als Qe-ra-si-ja auch in Kreta verehrt wurde. Somit wäre der Name Thera älteren, vielleicht vorgriechischen Ursprungs.
Die Venezianer nannten die Insel im Mittelalter nach einer hier errichteten Kapelle einer Heiligen Irene Santa Irini, was später zu Santorini wurde und im Deutschen analog zu Athen und Turin ohne Endvokal als Santorin wiedergegeben wurde.
Nach der Gründung des modernen Griechenland erhielt die Insel wie viele Orte wieder ihren antiken Namen, die außerhalb Griechenlands bekanntere Bezeichnung Santorini wird jedoch weiter benutzt.
