Porto (früher Oporto; portugiesische Aussprache ist die Hauptstadt des gleichnamigen Distriktes in Portugal und liegt am Douro vor dessen Mündung in den Atlantischen Ozean.
Mit circa 330.000 Einwohnern ist sie nach Lissabon zweitgrößte Stadt des Landes, der rund 1,26 Millionen Einwohner zählende Ballungsraum Grande Porto rangiert ebenfalls landesweit an zweiter Stelle.
Als Portus Cale in der Antike bekannt, wurde die Stadt 715 bis 997 von den Mauren beherrscht, 1130 startete hier der Kreuzzug unter Führung von Afonso I. Henriques, dem ersten portugiesischen König.
Heute ist Porto mit seiner Textil-, Lederwaren-, Metall-, Genussmittel- und chemischen Industrie, der Erdölraffinerie, dem Überseehafen Leixões und einem internationalen Flughafen wichtigste Industrie- und Handelsstadt und bedeutendes Verkehrszentrum des Landes.
Eine Universität, Kunstakademie, Museen, Theater und eine Oper heben Portos Stellung eines bedeutenden kulturellen und wissenschaftlichen Zentrums Portugals heraus.
Das historische Zentrum von Porto am Nordufer des Douro ist seit 1996 auf der UNESCO-Liste des Weltkulturerbes eingetragen. Bekanntheit erlangte die Stadt durch dessen Exportartikel, den Portwein.
