Lyon ist die Hauptstadt der Region Rhône-Alpes und des Départements Rhône im Osten Frankreichs.
Die Stadt liegt am Zusammenfluss der Rhône und der Saône. Mit circa 450.000 Einwohnern ist sie nach Paris und Marseille die drittgrößte Stadt des Landes.
Der rund 1,3 Millionen Einwohner zählende Ballungsraum rangiert nach der Île-de-France landesweit an zweiter Stelle.
Die Altstadt Lyons wurde 1998 von der UNESCO zum Weltkulturerbe erklärt. Lyon ist ein Bistum der römisch-katholischen Kirche – Bischofssitz ist die Kathedrale Saint-Jean in der Altstadt.
Noch markanter ist jedoch die Basilika Notre-Dame de Fourvière, die, 1871 auf der Spitze des gleichnamigen Hügels errichtet, die gesamte Stadt überragt.
Die Lyoner Gastronomie genießt einen exquisiten Ruf: Die gepriesene Vielfalt der traditionellen Küche findet in der seltenen Kombination aus Alpen-Nähe und schiffbaren Zugang zum Mittelmeer ihren Ursprung.
Nördlich und südlich der Stadt schließen sich die Weinanbaugebiete Beaujolais bzw. Côtes du Rhône an. Historisch ist die Stadt eng mit den canuts, den Seidenwebern, verknüpft, deren Handwerk während der industriellen Revolution die treibende Wirtschaftskraft war.
Darüberhinaus ist Lyon als Stadt des Lichtes bekannt, dem zu Ehren jährlich am 8. Dezember die Fête des Lumières gefeiert wird.
Lyon ist die Heimatstadt des Physikers André Marie Ampère, der Philosophin Savitri Devi Mukherji, des Schriftstellers Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, des Koches von Weltruhm Paul Bocuse sowie der Wegbereiter des modernen Kinos, den Gebrüdern Lumière.
Lyon ist Sitz der internationalen Polizeibehörde Interpol und der International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) IARC.
