Faro ist eine Stadt im Süden Portugals (Algarve) mit etwa 50.000 Einwohnern einem internationalen Flughafen (überwiegend Charterflüge) und einer Universität.
Faro ist das administrative Zentrum der Algarve seit in Folge des Erdbebens von 1755 der Regierungssitz des Königreiches Algarve von Lagos ins weniger zerstörte Faro verlegt wurde.
Die Ursprünge gehen auf die römische Zeit zurück. Faro war damals unter dem lateinischen Namen Ossonoba bekannt.
Im Jahr 713 wurde die Stadt von den Arabern besetzt, weshalb sich dort auch heute noch viele arabische Spuren finden lassen.
König Alfons III. eroberte Faro im Jahr 1249 wieder zurück. Erst 1540 erhielt Faro das Stadtrecht.
Die Altstadt verfügt über zahlreiche Sehenswürdigkeiten, u. a. eine Kathedrale aus dem 13. Jahrhundert und die "goldene" Kirche Nossa Senhora do Carmo aus dem 18. Jahrhundert.
